The concept of Magnetic Levitation was exploited commercially with this Patent, which was filed in 1967, and got granted in 1969. The inventors were from the Brookhaven National Laboratory, James Powell and Gordon Danby.

Their design was intended to use superconducting electromagnets to generate "a suspension force, for floating the train above the ground," and it was to use a "propellor, jet, [or] rocket" to achieve thrust.
